Scroll velocity

Rows that drift sideways and answer the page's scroll: faster scrolling pushes them faster and leans them a little, scrolling up turns them round, and they ease back to a slow drift when the page rests.

pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @caliper/scroll-velocity

What teams build

Scroll the page: the rows answer how fast you go.

Installs components/ui/scroll-velocity.tsxDepends on @radix-ui/react-slot, lucide-reactMotion honours reduced motion

When to use

Use it for

  • A landing section listing what people build, integrations or customers.
  • Once per page, between denser sections.

Skip it when

  • Content people must read or click; it moves.
  • Product screens.

Decisions

Why it is built this way, so you know what to keep when you change your copy.

Behaviour

Calm by default
Scrolling adds at most 600px a second and a 6° lean, and both ease off by about 90% a second.

Usage

Read once, pausable
Each row is read once from a hidden list; it pauses, stops off screen and stands still under reduced motion.

Installation

terminal
pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @caliper/scroll-velocity

Adds its 3 files to components/ui/, each with its own stylesheet, and installs their packages. Pro installs with your access token, set up once per project. See Pro access. The first part also adds Caliper UI’s tokens; import them once as in Installation.

Usage

Import it from your copy of the source. The example behind the preview comes with the source.

example.tsx
import { ScrollVelocity } from "@/components/ui/scroll-velocity"

The worked example comes with Pro

Accessibility

It is built on native elements and keeps aria-label and aria-pressed in step with state.

No custom key handling; Tab and the native activation keys do the work.

Motion

It checks prefers-reduced-motion itself and settles immediately instead of travelling. Every state is still reachable.
